Unlike normal colonized mycelium, this dense layer looks particularly thick, almost impermeable, and prevents primordia formation. The substrate beneath the overlay may appear healthy, but the sealed surface blocks the gas exchanges necessary for fruiting.

Characteristic signs include:

  • Excessively compact and shiny substrate surface
  • Absence of primordia 2-3 weeks after complete colonization
  • Mycelium continuing to grow in thickness rather than fruiting
  • Slightly acidic or stagnant odor

Main Causes of Overlay: CO2 and Humidity

The mycelium overlay develops primarily due to two critical environmental factors:

Excess CO2

During colonization, mycelium produces carbon dioxide. If ventilation is insufficient during the fruiting phase, CO2 accumulation stimulates the mycelium to grow upward seeking fresh air, forming the characteristic dense layer. Prolonged Excessive Humidity

  • Stimulate mycelium to react by producing primordia
  • Improve gas exchanges

  1. Sterilize a fork with 70% isopropyl alcohol or flame

Preventing Overlay in Cultivation

Ventilation Management

Humidity Control

Maintain humidity between 85-92% during fruiting, not at 95-100%. Mist container walls, not directly the substrate, to avoid surface pooling.

Fruiting Triggers

After colonization, introduce a slight environmental shock: lower temperature by 3-5°C, increase indirect light to 12 hours/day, improve ventilation. These changes signal the mycelium that it's time to fruit.

Substrate Choice

A substrate with proper initial hydration (field capacity) prevents many problems. If using natural substrate cultivation kits, carefully follow hydration instructions.

When Overlay Doesn't Resolve

If after fork tek and environmental corrections the mycelium overlay persists beyond 2 weeks, consider:

  • Strain genetics: some varieties are more susceptible
  • Latent contamination inhibiting fruiting
  • Exhausted substrate or altered pH
  • Inadequate temperature for the cultivated species

Species Most Sensitive to Overlay

Some species develop overlay mushroom more easily:

  • Pleurotus spp. in overly humid and stagnant environments
  • Psilocybe cubensis with insufficient ventilation
  • Agaricus spp. with excess CO2
  • Wood-loving species like Pleurotus ostreatus on overly compact substrates

Species like Oudemansiella mucida or Cerioporus squamosus are generally less subject to this problem thanks to their less critical environmental requirements.
