Mushroom Substrates: Master Blend, Millet and Rye — Which to Choose?

What Is a Mushroom Substrate?

A mushroom substrate is the nutritive medium on which mycelium grows and from which it draws the nutrients needed to produce fruiting bodies. Choosing the right substrate is crucial: each species has different preferences for lignocellulose type, moisture content and pH. You can purchase ready-to-use sterilized substrates — like those from Fungaia — or mix and sterilize your own from base ingredients.

Sterilized substrates in grow bags: ready for inoculation, no contamination risk.

Master Blend: The Professional Substrate

The Master Blend formula (often noted as MB 4:1:1) is the most acclaimed mix in the global mycology community. It combines:

  • Soy hulls: a high-protein nitrogen source for mycelium.
  • Wheat bran: carbohydrates and fiber for strong colonization.
  • Hardwood sawdust: the ideal lignocellulosic base for Shiitake, Lion's Mane, Pioppino and Cardoncello.

Fungaia's Master Blend sterilized 2.2 kg is autoclaved and packaged in a grow bag with an injection port and gas-exchange filter — ready for immediate inoculation with significantly higher yields than simple substrates.

"Master Blend isn't just a substrate — it's an optimized system for maximizing yield and fruit quality. Professional mycologists use it for a reason." — Fungaia Team

Sterilized Organic Millet: Ideal for Spawn

Sterilized millet is not a final substrate but an excellent colonization medium (grain spawn). Thanks to its spherical shape and starch-rich surface, millet is colonized by mycelium much faster than larger grains. Fungaia's 1L Bormioli jar with organic sterilized millet already includes a self-healing injection port and a gas-exchange filter patch — ready for direct liquid culture inoculation.

Organic grains before sterilization: millet, rye and wheat — the foundation of every great grow.

Sterilized Organic Rye: The Classic of Mycology

Rye is the grain traditionally most used in mycology, prized for its toughness and high nutrient density. It is ideal for species that prefer a rich substrate, such as Agaricus or certain Pleurotus varieties. Rye berries are larger than millet, which can slightly extend colonization time, but typically produces very reliable yields.

Which Substrate Should You Choose?

  • Master Blend 2.2 kg → Final fruiting substrate. Shiitake, Lion's Mane, Pioppino, Cardoncello. Maximum yield, direct use.
  • Organic Millet 750g → Grain spawn. All gourmet species. Fast colonization, great for beginners.
  • Organic Rye 750g → Grain spawn. Agaricus, Pleurotus, Shiitake. Traditional method, reliable yields.
  • All-In-One Kit 2 kg → Substrate + grain ready to go. Perfect for an absolute first attempt.
